Out of Box Experience - D-Link Wireless Products

D-Link is an award winning worldwide leader in the manufacturer of networking, connectivity, and data communications products. Frontend were asked to analyse and redesign the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) for D-Link’s wireless routing range of products.

Until recently, only technical experts would set up wireless networks. However, growth in the domestic Wi-Fi market means products now need to be accessible for the home user. Providing a smooth set-up experience has become a critical product requirement, reducing calls to customer support and improving brand perception.

Frontend carried out a detailed analysis of the D-Link OOBE, covering the retail environment, packaging design, instruction material and the installation CD. We conducted benchmarking against competitors products and conducted user testing with real customers to highlight and investigate all problem areas.

Frontend redesigned to out of box task flow and produced templates for the packaging, instructions, manuals and the set-up CD. The result was a faster, easier and less error-prone user experience. We produced a set of Out of Box guidelines so that the experience could be applied across a range of 120 + products throughout 20 European countries.

Testimonials

We selected Frontend from a list of several European companies providing Human Factors and Usability services. Their high level of expertise in the areas of Accessibility and Interface design for both hardware and software products was central to our decision. What pleased us most was the high level of knowledge, enthusiasm and team work that the Frontend engineers brought to the project.
